Nebraska — 1982

Background

Nebraska was released in 1982, a stark departure from Bruce Springsteen's usual full-band, arena-scale rock sound, recorded largely alone on a four-track cassette recorder in his home as demos for what was originally intended to become a full E Street Band album. Springsteen ultimately decided the stripped-back demo recordings themselves captured something the fuller studio versions couldn't, and released them essentially as recorded.

Sound

The title track opens the album with a spare acoustic guitar and harmonica arrangement, narrating a fictionalised account of a real-life killing spree with a flat, unsentimental delivery that gives the song a genuinely chilling quality. 'Atlantic City' and 'Highway Patrolman' both continue the record's preoccupation with characters pushed toward desperate, often violent choices by economic hardship and diminished prospects, delivered in the same stark, unadorned musical setting throughout.

Bleakness as subject

The album's characters — small-time criminals, desperate workers, people failed by the American promise of opportunity — reflect a much bleaker vision of American life than Springsteen's more anthemic, rock-oriented work, and the deliberately lo-fi, largely solo recording approach matches that bleakness formally as well as lyrically.

Nebraska is widely regarded as one of Bruce Springsteen's most significant and influential albums, its stark, home-recorded intimacy and unflinching examination of American desperation having directly influenced decades of subsequent singer-songwriters drawn to similarly minimal, narrative-driven folk and Americana.
