Background

Rumours was recorded in 1976 while nearly every member of Fleetwood Mac was going through a significant personal relationship breakdown simultaneously — Christine and John McVie were divorcing, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's long relationship was ending, and drummer Mick Fleetwood's marriage was also collapsing. Rather than derail the album, this tangle of heartbreak and tension became its explicit subject matter, with band members frequently writing songs directly about, and sometimes clearly aimed at, each other.

'Go Your Own Way' is Buckingham's blunt address to Nicks following their breakup, paired with one of the album's most propulsive rhythms; Nicks responded in kind with 'Dreams', built on a hypnotic, minimal bassline and her most enigmatic lyric on the record. 'The Chain' is the only song credited to all five band members, built from several abandoned song fragments stitched together during mixing, its ominous bassline eventually adopted as the theme music for Formula One television coverage in the UK.

Craft amid chaos

Despite the personal turmoil surrounding its creation, the album is remarkably polished and radio-friendly, a testament to how carefully the band and producers worked to make deeply personal, often bitter songs sound approachable and melodically generous. Christine McVie's 'Don't Stop' and 'You Make Loving Fun' provided some of the album's warmest, most optimistic moments, a counterbalance to the more wounded songs surrounding them.
