Background

Piece of Mind was released in 1983, the first Iron Maiden album to feature drummer Nicko McBrain, whose more technically accomplished playing style gave the band a rhythmic sophistication beyond their earlier records. The album arrived at the peak of the new wave of British heavy metal movement the band had helped establish, consolidating the melodic, twin-guitar-driven sound of their previous two albums into an even more confident and technically ambitious form.

'The Trooper' opens with one of the band's most instantly recognisable galloping riffs, its lyric depicting the Charge of the Light Brigade with the same vivid historical narrative style that would recur throughout the band's catalogue. 'Flight of Icarus' brought a more mid-tempo, anthemic approach aimed squarely at American rock radio, a deliberate attempt to broaden the band's audience beyond their existing metal fanbase.

Musicianship
