Background

Blue was recorded in 1971 following a period of significant personal upheaval for Joni Mitchell, and she has since described the songs as written with an almost uncomfortable degree of emotional exposure — Mitchell herself compared the process to feeling as though she had no skin, unable to protect herself from how directly the songs revealed her inner life. The result is widely regarded as one of the most nakedly personal albums ever recorded by a major artist.
