Why dust matters more than people think
A speck of dust sitting in a groove doesn't just cause a click on playback — it gets pressed into the vinyl by the stylus, grinding a permanent scratch that a wet clean can't undo. Static buildup makes the problem worse: static charge in a dry room actively attracts airborne dust to the record surface between plays, so a record can pick up a fresh layer of dust in the time between cleanings, even if it's never left the sleeve.
Storage basics
Store records vertically, never stacked flat — the weight of a stack warps vinyl and grinds dust into the surfaces beneath it. Use poly-lined inner sleeves rather than the paper ones records often ship in; paper sheds fibres directly into the groove. Keep the collection away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and away from damp — both accelerate warping and mould growth on sleeves.
A cleaning routine
A carbon-fibre brush before every play removes loose surface dust in seconds. In a room with a lot of airborne dust (older houses, homes with pets, high-traffic living rooms doubling as listening rooms), records accumulate a fresh dust layer between cleanings faster than a typical brush-before-play routine can keep up with.
A dedicated air purifier in the room where records are stored and played reduces that ambient dust load directly, rather than just wiping the symptom off the record each time. It's not a replacement for good sleeves and a cleaning routine — it's the one step that addresses where the dust is coming from in the first place.
