Background

On the Beach was released in 1974, part of what's sometimes called Neil Young's Ditch Trilogy — a run of albums deliberately less commercial and more personally raw than the more accessible Harvest, made in the wake of that album's massive success and the death of two close collaborators. The record's stark, often bleak songwriting reflects Young's deliberate turn away from easy commercial appeal.

'Walk On' opens the album with a comparatively upbeat, driving arrangement responding to critics of his more difficult recent work, while 'Revolution Blues', reportedly inspired partly by Young's unsettling proximity to Charles Manson's circle in Los Angeles, delivers a tense, menacing lyric over a similarly unsettled arrangement. The title track and 'Ambulance Blues' both stretch into extended, loosely structured, deeply personal meditations on isolation and disillusionment.
