Background

Harvest was released in 1972 and became Neil Young's most commercially successful album, recorded partly in Nashville with a mix of country session musicians and orchestral arrangements, moving toward a gentler, more accessible folk-country sound than the harder-edged rock of some of his work with Crazy Horse.

Sound

'Heart of Gold' became Young's only number-one single, built around a simple, warm acoustic arrangement and harmonica that gave the song an immediate, plainspoken emotional directness; 'Old Man' addresses the life of an elderly caretaker on Young's own ranch with unusual empathy and specificity, paired with one of the album's most memorable melodies. 'The Needle and the Damage Done' offers a stark, brief acoustic meditation on drug addiction within the music industry, recorded live and left largely unadorned.

Contrast

The album balances its more straightforwardly commercial, radio-friendly moments with starker, more personal material, including 'A Man Needs a Maid' and 'There's a World', both featuring orchestral arrangements by Jack Nitzsche that gave the record unexpected symphonic scope alongside its more intimate folk-country core.

Legacy

Harvest is widely regarded as one of Neil Young's most significant and accessible albums, its combination of plainspoken folk-country songwriting and occasional orchestral ambition helping establish the singer-songwriter template that much of 1970s soft rock and country-rock would draw on afterward. Despite, or because of, its greater commercial accessibility, Young himself has expressed some ambivalence about the album's dominant place in his catalogue relative to his more experimental work.
