Vs. — 1993

Background

Vs. was released in 1993 as Pearl Jam's second album, arriving under enormous commercial pressure following the multi-platinum success of their debut Ten, and the band responded by deliberately pushing toward a rawer, less radio-polished sound. Produced with Brendan O'Brien rather than Ten's producers, the album favours a more direct, live-in-the-room energy over the layered, arena-ready production of the debut.

Sound

'Go' and 'Animal' open the album with a tighter, more aggressive energy than anything on Ten, Eddie Vedder's vocal delivery pushed harder and rawer throughout. 'Daughter' became one of the album's biggest hits, built around a quieter, more melodic verse that opens into a devastating chorus addressing childhood neglect, while 'Rearviewmirror' closes side one with one of the band's most propulsive, cathartic recorded performances.

Restraint and reaction

Notably, the band deliberately declined to release official music videos for any of the album's singles and resisted the kind of promotional push that had made Ten inescapable on MTV, a conscious pushback against the machinery of fame the band had been swept into. Despite, or perhaps because of, that restraint, Vs. still debuted at number one and sold enormously in its first week.

Legacy

Vs. is widely regarded by longtime fans and critics as the record where Pearl Jam asserted creative control over their own image and sound, refusing to simply repeat the formula that had made Ten a phenomenon. Its rawer, less commercially calculated approach set the tone for the band's subsequent, more artistically restless career, and it remains one of the most fondly regarded albums in their catalogue.
