Store them upright, always

Vinyl should be stored vertically, like books — never stacked flat, which warps records over time. Whatever you buy needs to hold LPs upright without leaning, with enough support that a full row doesn't slump.

The classic cube unit

The most popular vinyl solution is the cube shelf: each roughly 33cm cube fits a stack of LPs perfectly. IKEA's Kallax is the famous example, but many makers sell similar cube units. Avoid shelves so deep or wide that records lean and warp.

Crates, browsers and dividers

For smaller collections, a sturdy crate or a flip-through 'browser' bin keeps things tidy and easy to flick through. Dividers or index cards make a growing collection far easier to live with.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in record storage furniture?

Shelving that holds records upright, is deep enough for 12-inch sleeves (around 32–33cm), and is sturdy enough for vinyl's weight. Cube-style units sized for LPs are a popular, affordable choice.

How many records fit in a typical cube?

A standard LP-sized storage cube holds roughly 60–75 records depending on sleeve thickness. Leave a little room rather than packing tightly — it makes browsing easier and protects the sleeves.
