Upright, always
Store records vertically like books. Stacking them flat puts weight on the discs and causes warping over months and years.
Climate
Keep records out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or damp. Heat warps vinyl and damages sleeves; stable room temperature is ideal.
Sleeves and spacing
Use anti-static inner sleeves and outer plastic sleeves to protect both record and artwork, and don't over-pack shelves — you should be able to flip through without forcing.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I stack records flat?
Weight from stacking presses down on the records below, causing warping and ring wear on the sleeves. Always store them upright like books so the weight is spread evenly.
What conditions damage records?
Heat, humidity and direct sunlight are the main enemies — they warp vinyl and degrade sleeves. A cool, dry spot out of direct light, with records stored vertically and not over-packed, keeps them in good shape.
