The four parts

A vinyl setup is: turntable, phono preamp, amplifier, and speakers. Some of these are often combined — which is why beginners get confused.

The shortcuts

A turntable with a built-in preamp plus active (powered) speakers covers all four jobs in two boxes — the simplest complete setup. Add a separate amp and passive speakers only if you want room to upgrade.

Getting the basics right

Level the turntable, set the tracking force per the cartridge's spec, and keep the stylus clean. Free, and it protects both your sound and your records.

Frequently asked questions

What do I actually need to play records?

Three things: a turntable, something to amplify the phono signal (a built-in or separate phono preamp), and speakers. Powered speakers combine the amplifier and speakers into one, which is the simplest route.

Do I need to set up the cartridge myself?

Many beginner decks come with the cartridge pre-fitted, so setup is minimal. If you fit your own, setting the tracking force and alignment correctly protects your records and gets the best sound.
