Background

Loveless was recorded across a notoriously long and expensive process between 1989 and 1991, reportedly cycling through numerous studios and engineers as Kevin Shields pursued an exact, difficult-to-articulate sonic vision, with recording costs that became something of a music industry legend in their own right, reportedly nearly bankrupting the band's label.

Sound

The album is built around Shields' signature guitar technique — a constantly shifting, pitch-bending 'glide guitar' sound achieved through a whammy bar used in a highly unconventional, continuous manner, layered into dense, swirling washes of sound that blur clean lines between individual notes. Vocals throughout, shared between Shields and Bilinda Butcher, are mixed low and treated almost as another textural instrument rather than a clear, foregrounded lead, a technique that became a defining feature of the shoegaze genre the album helped establish.
