Background

Nevermind was recorded in under a month in the spring of 1991 with producer Butch Vig, on a modest budget that reflected Nirvana's status as a well-regarded but commercially minor band on an independent label. Nobody involved — the band, Vig, or DGC Records, who'd signed the group after their independent debut Bleach — expected the album to do more than sell a respectable number of copies to college radio listeners and the existing underground rock audience. Its actual trajectory, displacing Michael Jackson's Dangerous from the top of the US charts within months of release, remains one of the most unexpected commercial upsets in music history.

'Smells Like Teen Spirit' opens the album and became its inescapable calling card — a four-chord riff, a quiet-loud-quiet structure borrowed consciously from Pixies (Kurt Cobain said as much directly), and a chorus of half-shouted, deliberately opaque lyrics that resisted easy interpretation even as the song became a genuine cultural phenomenon. The production, cleaner and more polished than the band's rawer earlier material, was a point of some later ambivalence for Cobain, who felt it sanded down some of the band's rougher edges — but that same polish is precisely what made the record's aggression legible to a mainstream radio and MTV audience that had never really engaged with underground rock before.

Beyond the single

The album's other tracks hold up as more than a hit-plus-filler collection: 'Come as You Are' pairs a chorus-effect guitar line with lyrics about contradiction and acceptance; 'Lithium' moves between depressive verses and cathartic choruses in the same dynamic shift that defined the album's biggest single; 'In Bloom' quietly mocks the exact audience — casual fans who'd sing along without engaging with the substance — that the album's success would go on to attract in enormous numbers. 'Something in the Way', closing the album on acoustic guitar and cello, points toward the more stripped-down direction the band would take on In Utero two years later.

Legacy

Nevermind is credited, sometimes to the point of cliché, with ending the commercial dominance of hair metal and glam rock virtually overnight and establishing alternative rock as a mainstream commercial force rather than a college-radio niche — a shift the music industry was completely unprepared for. Its cover image, an infant swimming toward a dollar bill on a fishhook, became nearly as culturally ubiquitous as the music itself. For a band that recorded the album on a shoestring budget expecting modest sales, Nevermind's actual impact reshaped the commercial landscape of rock music for the rest of the decade.
